GNE-BICC1 Fusion FISH Probe
The GNE-BICC1 Fusion FISH Probe is used to confirm a fusion of the GNE and BICC1 genes. The fusion of the GNE and BICC1 genes has been associated with Skin Cutaneous Melanoma. These probes are FISH confirmed on normal peripheral blood in both interphase nuclei and metaphase spreads before shipment. Typical turnaround time for this product is 7-14 days after purchase.

GNE Gene Summary
The protein encoded by this gene is a bifunctional enzyme that initiates and regulates the biosynthesis of N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc), a precursor of sialic acids. It is a rate-limiting enzyme in the sialic acid biosynthetic pathway. Sialic acid modification of cell surface molecules is crucial for their function in many biologic processes, including cell adhesion and signal transduction. Differential sialylation of cell surface molecules is also implicated in the tumorigenicity and metastatic behavior of malignant cells. Mutations in this gene are associated with sialuria, autosomal recessive inclusion body myopathy, and Nonaka myopathy. Alternative splicing of this gene results in transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Gene Name: Glucosamine (UDP-N-acetyl)-2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine Kinase
Chromosome: CHR9: 36214438 -36277053
Locus: 9p13.3
BICC1 Gene Summary
This gene encodes an RNA-binding protein that is active in regulating gene expression by modulating protein translation during embryonic development. Mouse studies identified the corresponding protein to be under strict control during cell differentiation and to be a maternally provided gene product. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2009]
Gene Name: BicC Family RNA Binding Protein 1
